Updates From HQ (Jan 2025)

Updated over 4 months ago

This time last year we started sharing some behind-the-scenes updates from Wildkind HQ.

They sparked some great discussions and helped us make Camp even better so weโ€™re making them a regular feature.

๐Ÿ“‹ Notable Things From 2024 ๐Ÿ“‹

Company & People

  • The team growing from 6 full time on 1st Jan to 9 full time (+ one dog) on the 31st Dec! ๐Ÿ•

  • Achieving our highest ever measures on customer satisfaction from the summer events ๐Ÿ† We use Net Promoter Score and got 74 for Camp Wildfire which is excellent! Over 80 is considered world-class so that's our goal ๐Ÿ”ฅ Camp Kindling got 48 which is strong but we are determined to get it up to world-class over the next few years.

  • Making a profit for the first time since COVID! A very modest 2% but it's such an important milestone in our pandemic recovery ๐Ÿ“ˆ (we used it to pay down some COVID debts and give the team a much-deserved bonus)

Digital

  • Rebuilding the activity enrollment system from the ground up ๐Ÿงฑ This was an incredibly daunting undertaking after a few failed attempts but SO WORTH IT!! During peak enrollment, we were processing over 2400 enrolments per second ๐Ÿš€ and had plenty of headroom to scale further in the future. We now have the foundations to build some exciting new enrollment features, and the expertise and experience to rebuild other parts of our tech.

  • Launching a new customer service system with a detailed knowledgebase, an AI chat to help 24/7 with quick answers and an awesome team of 4 part-time humans to help with more complex requests. This allowed us to deal with 21,182 queries across the year and achieve a customer satisfaction score of 4.1 out of 5 โญโญโญโญ (This year weโ€™re aiming for over 4.5).

  • ๐Ÿ“– Writing loads of deep dive help guides to help enhance everyoneโ€™s camp experience and some that help with general camping and festivals too. ๐Ÿ“–

Events

  • Adding new stuff to the events like The Woodshed Stage ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐ŸŽธ Reserved Camping ๐Ÿ•๏ธ and Porter Service ๐Ÿงณ

  • Making huge improvements to things like Toilets, Showers, Cleaning Teams, Info Teams, The Ranger Team and Live-in-vehicle Pitches.

  • Hosting our first supplier and crew socials in Spring and Autumn to bring some of the wider team together outside of the summer events ๐Ÿค

  • Organising all the food in-house instead of via a specialist agency! It was a lot of work and learning but ultimately allowed us to offer more options, have higher quality controls, reduce fees for the traders and ultimately prices for campers ๐ŸŒฎ

  • Launching our Parent-Friendly concept to remove all the tiny hassles for parents and ensure their weekend is as fun as their kids! This helped the team focus on finding loads of tiny improvements like creating play areas near lunch spots and using giant bubble machines to entertain kids while parents put tents up ๐Ÿ˜Ž

  • Camp Wildfire Week 1 was hit by Storm Lillian which shut down most of the UK, but we just adventured and partied right through it! Campers kept the spirits high and the ops team kept 98% of activity sessions and 100% of performances happening. Extremely impressive all round ๐Ÿ’ช

Community

  • Experimenting with solo parent meetups to help people get to know each other. We plan to take this much further this year ๐ŸŒˆ

  • Creating a youth-focused programme to improve the camp experience for 12-17-year-olds and getting feedback that it helped them make new friends that they are still in touch with now ๐Ÿ‘ซ

  • Seeing couples that met at Camp propose, get married and have babies brought joy into our hearts. โค๏ธ Sadly a couple of much-loved Campers passed away this year too. Tributes held to them at Camp were deeply moving and reminded us of the importance of this community ๐Ÿ’”

๐Ÿฆ„ Hopes & Dreams For 2025 ๐Ÿฆ„

Company & People

  • Aiming to sell out all events in record time. We've already sold 70% of all tickets before Xmas this year (compared to 50% last year) which is just the most amazing level of support for what we are doing!

  • Growing the team from 9 to 12/13 full-time. If youโ€™d like to join us check out our open roles Full Stack Front End Developer, Festivals & Events Manager, Digital/Growth Marketer. We will shortly be posting a role for a Finance Director too.

  • ๐ŸŽฏ Trying to codify our mission to keep the team aligned as we grow. We had a first stab at it and will be refining it as we see how it resonates over the year

  • Moving offices! This is wayyy overdue. Weโ€™ve agreed terms for a new place in Elephant & Castle and should be in by the 1st April ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ“ฆ

  • โ™ป๏ธ Getting back on top of our carbon negative/neutral and wider environmental impact plans. Weโ€™ve made small progress the last few years but not as much as we want.

  • ๐ŸŽ“ Having time and resources to invest in developing the teamโ€™s skills. Weโ€™ve got a lot of learning lined up for everyone this year. ๐ŸŽ“

  • Taking a team trip to a festival. Weโ€™ve never all been to one together so thought we should do that this year ๐Ÿ•บ

  • Having a mega fun year of celebrating 10 years of Wildkind. It's been a wild decade and we haven't necessarily had much time to step back and appreciate it all with the team and the community. Now seems like a good time to reconnect with it all. Celebration plans are strictly secret at the moment ๐Ÿคซ๐ŸŽ‰

Digital

  • ๐Ÿ›’ Finally launching an e-commerce store after 10 years of requests! Coming in May. ๐Ÿ›’

  • ๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Rebuilding the bookings tech for tickets and accommodation from the foundations. We will sell out of tickets for this year before itโ€™s finished, but it will improve the experience for booking add-ons like Sanctuary during enrollment. It will take over all ticketing and accommodation for 2026 onwards. Once this piece of work is done it opens so many possibilities for improving customer experiences so itโ€™s very very exciting!

Events

  • Continuing to add new features and improve all the details of the events so they are truly world-class, life-changing experiences for everyone that attends

  • Experimenting with new event formats to bring people together more regularly and deliver little packages of joy throughout the year. We have so many ideas (including beach/lake days, hiking/rafting/skiing trips, games nights, patrol/solo/city meetups, winter wildfires) and hope to test at least 3 this year ๐Ÿ„

  • ๐ŸŒฑ Growing more grass for some improvements we have planned in 2026 (for those who are invested in our grass-growing escapades) ๐ŸŒฑ

  • Conducting a deep dive review of the sanctuary, cupids club and childcare add-ons to improve the experiences offered.

  • Experimenting with coach packages from major hubs (eg London, Manchester, Bristol). To help Campers get to the event and reduce travel emissions ๐ŸšŒ๐ŸŒ

Community

  • Continuing to drive down the amount of money we spend with big tech firms on marketing (achieved an 8% reduction last year). We're going to experiment with moving investment into newsletters, podcasts and YouTube content following the success of the written help guides ๐ŸŽฌ

  • Working with our group of COVID heroes ๐Ÿฆธโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿฆธโ€โ™‚๏ธ to decide how to pay forward the COVID donations they made to help us survive. We pledged to pay them on to other causes once our finances were stabilised.

As ever, we are always keen to hear your thoughts and ideas on all of this, just drop us a DM or an email!
